Organisasi Perlindungan Hewan Dunia atau World Animal Protection bisa menghela nafas lega dengan kabar baik soal penangkapan sosok ‘Tiger Habib’ setelah 20 tahun pelariannya. Tiger Habib atau Habib Harimau dijuluki kepada pria yang kini berusia 50 tahun , Habib Talukder – setelah dirinya menjadi buronan karena memburu sekitar 70 ekor Harimau Bengal.
Harimau Bengal salah satu satwa yang dilindung karena terancam punah, yang berasal dari India, dan keberadaaanya juga tercatat di Bangladesh dan beberapa di Nepal. Menurut departemen kehutanan Bangladesh, populasi harimau Bengal turun dari 440 pada 2004 ke rekor terendah 106 pada 2015. Pada 2019, populasi Bengal merangkak hingga 114 berkat tindakan keras terhadap perburuan dan bandit di wilayah tersebut. Harimau Bengal tergolong unik di antara kucing besar lainnya karena dapat hidup dan berburu di air payau dan di hutan bakau. Mereka adalah perenang yang mahir.
Jumlah polpulasinya yang semakin menurun, menjadikan keberadaan ‘Habib Tiger’ sebagai masalah serius yang sangat memusingkan selama 20 tahun terakhir.
Talukder diketahui sengaja tinggal disebelah hutan tempat dia berburu, agar mudah untuk kabur sewaktu-waktu. Rupanya keberuntungannya tidak bertahan selamanya, kepolisian Bangladesh berhasil mencium keberadaaannya dan menangkap si pemburu raja kucing tersebut di kawasan hutan bakau Sundarbans yang luas yang membentang di India dan Bangladesh, yang merupakan rumah bagi salah satu populasi harimau Bengal terbesar di dunia.
“Kami sama-sama menghormatinya dan takut padanya,” kata Abdus Salam, seorang pemburu madu lokal.
“Dia (Talkuder) adalah orang berbahaya yang bisa bertarung sendirian dengan Mama (harimau) di dalam hutan.
seluruh bagian dari perburuan kucing besar ditawarkan mulai dari kulit, tulang, dan daging Harimau kepada pedagang pasar gelap yang akan menjualnya di China dan tempat lain.”
“Kami berhasil mengirimnya ke penjara, setelah menemukan sejumlah petunjuk soal keberadaannya”, ungkap Kepala Polisi setempat – Saidur Rahman.
Mainuddin Khan, seorang petugas konservasi hutan regional, mengatakan berita penangkapan Talukder menjadi kabar yang “melegakan”. Sampai saat ini Polisi Bangladesh telah berhasil menangkap dan menghentikan perburuan liar yang sudah memakan sekitar 70 ekor Harimau Bengal.
